| My name is Andy Wyss. I grew up on hobby farm near the town of Clear Lake, Wisconsin. Even from a young age, I was always interested in art. In fact for many years, I wanted to grow up and become an illustrator. By my senior year of high school, I had already designed numerous logos, t-shirts, and print media for sports teams, school clubs, local businesses, and community organizations. Following graduation, I knew I wanted to become a graphic designer. However, due to the overabundance of students wanting to enter this field, I knew I had to work twice as hard to become noticed and respected. I began attending college at the University of Minnesota-Duluth, but transferred after my freshman year to Concordia University in St. Paul, Minnesota. The switch allowed my creativity to flourish. I began connecting with the Concordia professors, classmates, and local graphic designers. While at Concordia, I designed countless theater posters, event signage, club t-shirts, sports logos, etc. In 2008, I was promoted to Senior Design and Layout Editor of the campus newspaper. However, the greatest artistic accomplishment was being awarded First Place, and Best in Show, at the 2007 and 2009 Juried Student Art Exhibitions. Having been influenced by my upbringing in rural surroundings, I enjoy making work that embodies the principal connotations of country life, middle-class America, and the past. Mostly, I enjoy creating works of art that allow me to express ideas that I am uncomfortable expressing verbally. I begin my process with brainstorming and research, usually sketching ideas before diving into the digital realm. Lately, my work has featured a great deal of layers and textures, giving the appearance of weathered and worn-out images. I desire to generate art that is aesthetically pleasing, creative, emotive, and thought provoking. I believe art is the most powerful medium for expression in the world, and I use my God-given artistic talent to produce such work. |
